When Google Requires Phone Verification

Not every Gmail registration requires a phone number — Google sometimes allows email-only account creation. But if your IP has a history of mass registrations, you're using a VPN or datacenter IP, or Google's risk model flags your session, phone verification becomes mandatory. Google's Strictness Toward Virtual Numbers

After Registration

Immediately after creating your Google account: add a recovery email, set up Google Authenticator or another TOTP app for two-factor authentication, and complete your profile. This reduces your long-term dependence on the phone number. For Google Workspace business accounts, plan to replace the virtual number with a permanent one — admin accounts require higher security standards.

Google Ads Considerations

Google Ads accounts benefit from geographic consistency — a US number + US IP + English browser language gives the highest trust score. If you're running ads for a specific market, use a number from that country. New ad accounts have daily spend limits that gradually increase with account age and good standing.
